After we had been to Aberdeen, we got in our hire car and drove towards the place where the party we were attending was going to take place. On our way there we decided to stop off at Dunnottar Castle, that I had wanted to visit for a while. The weather was overcast, but it was not raining, and it was only a little windy, so it was a good day for a visit.

You can find Dunnottar Castle perched atop a 160-foot rock, and it is surrounded on three sides by the North Sea. The cliff-top ruins where once an impregnable fortress of the Earls Marischal, once one of the most powerful families in Scotland. According to their own web page Dunnottar Castle is ” Steeped in history, this romantic and haunting ruin is a photographer’s paradise, a history lover’s dream and an iconic tourist destination for visitors the world over.” It is considered one of Scotland’s most popular and spectacular tourist attractions and it has a very rich history.

For over 1000 years the Castle played a very important role in Scottish history, and it has played host to some of the nations greatest historical figures like William Wallace and Mary Queen of Scots. And it is famous for its role in saving the Honours of Scotland (the Scottish Crown Jewels) from Oliver Cromwell’s army in the 1650s.

Dunnottar Castle was also one of the locations in Braveheart, Zeffirelli’s Hamlet, Victor Frankenstein, it was the inspiration for the family castle in Disney’s Brave and Some scenes from Game of Thrones tv series was filmed there.

I really enjoyed being at Dunnottar, the views were amazing. Walking from the car park seeing the Castle in the distance and the lovely little walk over to it was beautiful and walking around among the ruins taking in the history and seeing how grand it must have been in its day was something special.

If you are ever in the Aberdeen area, I can really recommend a visit. But I imagine it could get quite windy in autumn. May was a good time to go as there was not too many tourists, but the weather was ok.

Hope you have enjoyed sightseeing with me.
Short update from me in Ireland. My competition went very good. We got in second in pur division even if we were just promoted this year. Hope you’re all well.

Thanks for the memories Maja. We visited this place during our 1977 honeymoon and it was one of our favourite stops. Happy Friday. Allan
Spectacular, Mas! (Is that what you go by, btw?). I so long to visit Scotland.
I go by Mas or Maja 🙂 I would like to go back to Scotland too
Good to know, Thanks, Mas. My wife and I both have Scottish ancestry, highland lairds in fact, with two castles to visit. One is a scenic ruin overlooking a loch, and the other an operating b&b.
Sounds wonderful!
Nice write-up and beautiful pix. Loved Braveheart! 😎❤️
Thank you for your kind words
