Soda bread

One of the things I am doing this weekend is practicing baking soda bread. As there is a UN day at day care next week we are asked if we would be willing to bring in something edable from our culture for the kids to enjoy. As Ickle Pickle is half Irish I asked her father what would be an Irish thing that small kids would enjoy and he said soda bread. So that’s what I am going for.

Dough ready

We got a familiy recipie sent over from Ireland and some nice videos of how they usually make it. I will have to experiment a little as the products we have here are comparable, but not excactly the same.

Crossing the top to keep the evil spirit away

Another thing that is different is the units in the recipie, so I had to have the internet available to convert it for me ro make sure I got the right amounts. Hopefully the tablespoons are the same.

Finished

We enjoyed it with some butter and jam. It turned out really nice, but a little too dense  so I will try again tomorrow with a different ratio of fine and corse flour.

What are you up to today?

  1. I love this recipe! It reminds me of the time we went to a Rome-themed dinner and they bring the bread out looking exactly as yours does – BUT they have cooked it with strings on the top where you made the cross…and you each pull one string and it cuts the bread into four pieces! This weekend is all about exploring New York and eating at Frank Sinatra’s favorite restaurant here called Patsy’s – and yes, I will be sharing that story! Have a great weekend!
