#TTT Scotland 2022: Aberdeen

Happy halloween everyone here is another Trowback Travel Thursday for you. Hope you enjoy.

In 2022 we flew to Aberdeen Scotland, as we were invited to our friends’ surprise 40th birthday. I was not feeling to well when we left and ended up spending a lot of the first few days with a little bit of a fever and a blocked-up nose. Typical to get sick just before leaving, but as I had checked it was not Covid and the worst of it was already over I felt well enough to travel. We did get out to have a lovely curry, and a little walk in the afternoon when we arrived. And then it was an early night for me so that I could get some sleep to feel better the rest of the trip.

Aberdeen is a town I have been to a few times before and I have always enjoyed going there. The town is not very large but has everything we need. It is also a town that is quite easy to get to from my town of Stavanger. There are many direct flights as the two towns are twin cities and there are a lot of people going back and forth with work. And the flight is just around an hour in a little propeller plane.

The next day we took things very slowly, but I did get a bit of shopping in, and we had a nice wander around town. Visited the Brew Dog pub for a few drinks, they had some trouble with the kitchen, so we did not eat there. I do enjoy the Brew Dog’s beers, and they also had a nice pink gin that I decided to try. As I was not all well, I did not have many drinks.  As the pub did not have any food that day, we went over to Slains castle to enjoy a meal there. They have easy pub food and also a good selection of beer. If we had been there more days, I would have loved to take part in the Harry Potter quiz they had every week. I don’t know if that is still a thing, but it was when we were there, just not on the days we were in town.  I really liked looking for the toilet door that is hidden in a bookcase and there was a very surprised-looking tourist staring at me as I left the restroom.

The hotel we stayed in this time, The Station Hotel, was not the best hotel I have stayed at, but it might be better now as they were in the process of renovating when we were there, so I might be willing to give it another go. The rooms were not small, and the parking was very handy for how centrally the hotel was located. The breakfast was nice, but I opted out of having Haggis for breakfast, that was not what I really wanted early in the morning. We stayed there for two nights before we headed onwards, and my form was miles better after the two nights. So that was a really good thing, as it is definitely not great being sick at a party or when you have a good bit of sightseeing planned.

Hope you are enjoying your day!

  1. One of my first internet experiences, over 30 years ago, was looking up some horse health information. It took me a few moments to realize that there is no University in Aberdeen, South Dakota (a few hundred miles away) and that I was actually seeing information from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland! That’s a long way from the Midwest United States and I’ve wanted to go there ever since. It was my first www experience and I was very grateful. Always nice to see and hear of that lovely place.

  2. We were in Aberdeen in 1977 on our honeymoon. We found it very cold in October and really should have come back in better weather. Have a great day. Allan

  3. It’s just lovely to travel vicariously with you since I’ll never get to see it on my own. Pink gin sounds interesting but wonder if it tastes different from regular. I’m glad you finally felt better to enjoy the party.
