Ireland winter 2024: Belmullet

After we had stayed at our friends farm, we drove a little further north to Swinford in county Mayo to meet up with more family members, some of them had not seen Ickle pickle before so this was her first time meeting them. She got spring rolls for dinner and ice cream for dessert, so she was happy. The rest of us were also very happy with the delicious food served and with the good company.

After the family get-together we drove a bit further Northwest driving in parts on the Wild Atlantic Way, to the little town of Belmullet. The Wild Atlantic Way is the world’s largest touring route (2,500km), stretching from Donegal to Cork.

Belmullet is in the barony of Erris, located on the northwest coast of Co. Mayo in Ireland and is one of the most westerly points in Europe. This cute little town has many sights worth seeing, but sadly we did not have the opportunity to see that much this time. But we would love to go back in summertime. The coast, and beaches there would be better to visit then.

They are, among other things, known for their tidal pools, Blacksod lighthouse and lovely beaches. You can enjoy idyllic, white sandy beaches, wind-swept coasts and stunning cliffs. Belmullet is a real heaven for surfers, walkers and enthusiasts of water-sports.

We stayed at the Talbot hotel, a lovely boutique hotel that I would recommend. They have a wonderful restaurant that is great for seafood. We were too full from our previous meal to be able to enjoy it much this time around. But will for sure be back. We did get to enjoy a really lovely breakfast there; the food was amazing, and the staff was so accommodating to us and Ickle Pickle was very happy.

We then went for a walk along the beach to get to move a little bit and grab a little bit of fresh air before we were getting in the car to drive across the country again to go back south for the rest of our stay. So when it was nap time we got in the car and drove and the scenery we drove through was really something.

Hope you are all having a good time and that you are ready for the weekend. I know I am.

  1. You got my interest when you mentioned surfing at Belmullet. Brrr! 🥶 I’m sure they’re wearing 6/4 wetsuits, gloves and boots 😂 Thanks for a great trip report 😎
