Constitution day and holiday

One of the cars racing

Last weekend was the 17th of May, Norway’s constitution day. Where we celeberate getting our own constitution in 1814, even if we did not get out of the union with Sweden and become independent before a referendum in 1905. Sweden got Norway off Danmark, that ruled us for ages before they had to give us away when they lost a war. We are very thankful for our constitution and our independence.

We had ice cream for breakfast, watched the childrens parade, had lunch and cakes and ice cream in my cousin’s garden and watched the people’s parade where all the sports, dance and music groups go. The weather was stunning and the company great. Ickle Pickle had an amazing day and was so tired after it that she fell asleep on the way home and again straight after having changed.

The cars have no motor, but go really fast!

The day after we went to watch a car race called Våland Down. Where kids (helped by their parents) build a car and race down a hill. The cars have no motors, but usually you can steer it and it should have some breaks, becuase the hill they are going down has many turns and is quite steep. We enjoyed the sunshine and the show, got ourselves some waffles and met some people we knew. It was all great fun and a good little outing for the day.

Cars taking a rest after the race

The rest of the week has been really busy with work and getting ready for going to Crete for a week, tomorrow really early. So now we are packed and I have to do a little bit of tidying before going to bed early and try and get some sleep before the taxi come and take is to the airport. I am really looking forward to going.

What are your weekend plans?

  1. Happy Constitution Day, and I think it’s good you’re independent nowadays. We could probably learn a lot from your country 🙂

  2. Anytime you can have ice cream for breakfast is a good day. The car races here are called Soap Box Derby and I coordinated the local version two years in a row. Happy Saturday Maja. Allan

      1. The original gravity propelled scooters and cars of the 1930s were built by neighbourhood kids, using packing crates, soap boxes, sheets of tin, and whatever else they could find. They would race with each other. A reporter saw this and realized there would be a good story. The name just stuck and organized races began. There is still quite an organization of racing events in North America. Our city just held their race yesterday. The cars now are more refined and streamlined and most are no longer built by kids. Cheers

  3. We have Open Studios here, which means most of the local artists open their studios to the public. We’ll drive around and visit a lot of them.
    Wishing you happy holidays

  4. This looks a lot of fun. A friend has just come back from Crete and experienced a few minor earth tremors. Not unusual in that part of the world. I hope you are enjoying. It’s many years since we were in Crete but I liked it a lot xx

    1. Thank you, we did enjoy. The tremors where over when we got there. We did get a bit of rain with sand from the Sahara dessert, but that was all 🙂 I always enjoy Crete.
