Our destination for the long day of travelling and sightseeing was Geiranger, at the bottom of the Geiranger fjord.

The road leading down to the fjord was a bit steep and full of turns, but not as much as Trollstigen that we had been driving earlier in the day. And this had a good view point to stop and take in the view of the fjord.

Geiranger is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the world, and has been named the best travel destination in Scandinavia by Lonely Planet. Since 2005, the Geirangerfjord area has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

When we arrived the hotel kindly upgraded us and we got a wonderful room with the most amazing view. A lot of the time there are many cruise ships in, blocking a bit of the view, but this afternoon there were none in. Leaving us with an amazing sight from our little balcony, in the lovely warm sunshine.

We had a walk around the charming little village and enjoyed the amazing views. From the cosy shops, the magnificent fjord and the great waterfall.

Before we ended up in the lovely outdoor serving of the hotel where we enjoyed quite a bit of the local beer, a wonderful cheese and meat platter and some dumplings. Both the food and beer was really tasty and plentiful.

The village also has a fantastic chocolate factory with an outlet and cafe. We got some chocolate and ice cream and some chocolate to bring home. It was really tasty.

Geiranger is under constant threat from landslides from the mountain Åkerneset into the fjord. A collapse could cause a tsunami that could destroy downtown Geiranger.

For this reason, sirens have been installed to warn residents if a landslide should occur. This threat has been made in to a film in Norway called “the wave”.

The next day when we woke up we got a little glimpse of what the fjord is like with the large ships in. Lucky for us we got to see it without and the boats in now are not the largest.

Hope you are all well and that this week will bring all sorts of nice things.

Amazingly beautiful location (I was fortunate enough to visit Norway in my youth, so I have some idea of the sheer beauty of the place).

Thank you!
Wow, this town and location are so very beautiful! The food and ice cream look delicious too. I thought the cruise ship was a little smaller than the large ships today. I envy your tour of these beautiful locations! ❤️🇳🇴
Thank you, it is lovely and a wonderful trip. Nice to look back on
Yes, it is a spectacular place and I really need to see it again. I did see “The Wave” last winter and I enjoyed it. I suppose that scenario is possible, but is it likely?
I don’t think it is very likely.
